I don’t know about you…but puff pastry has become our favorite thing in 2020. It’s flaky and so versatile. Today we used puff pastry to make these incredible jam filled pinwheels. Which are a great addition to any breakfast, brunch, or tea party. It is super easy to make and taste just like pastry from a bakery!

Since the start of the pandemic, we have been trying to make fetch happen. For a minute in 2020, finding all purpose flour was rather hard. But, puff pastry was always available in the frozen section of grocery stores. So the question became what can we make with this type of dough?

Our go-to Store Brought Puff Pastry

When necessary we like to keep things simple. So instead of spending hours making fresh puff pastry. Make life easier and purchase store-brought. Our top two favorites are Dufour pastry (it’s so buttery) and Pepperidge Farm (it’s readily available and vegan friendly).

Making Puff Pastry Pinwheels

Making these pinwheels were fun. First, start by dusting a clean surface with all purpose flour. This step will prevent the puff pastry from sticking to your counter tops. Basically destroying all your hard work. Roll out the puff pastry, one sheet at a time. Next, cut the pastry into 6 equal and even squares. Then using a pairing knife, slice all 4 corners inward as shown in the pictures below.

Transfer the squares to a lined parchment paper. Add a hemp amount of cream cheese and your favorite jam into the center. Fold one corner of each triangle piece towards the center. Press down firmly and repeat the process for the remaining sides. In order to prevent the pinwheels from opening while baking, insert a toothpick in the center. In a small bowl, mix together an egg and water. Brush the egg wash on the flat side of the pinwheels. Sprinkle with granulated sugar. Bake for 15-25 minutes at 425 degrees F. Enjoy!

Pinwheel Flavors

We love anything that has versatility….so when making these pinwheels feel free to create whatever your heart desires. Rather it’s filled with just cheese, jam or ham. Below are a few variations we believe are worth wild:

  • Cream Cheese & Apricot Jam
  • Cream Cheese & Raspberry or Strawberry Jam
  • Blackberry Jam
  • Cherry Pie Filling
  • Mascarpone Cheese
